We forgo the well-travelled path because we are driven by the reward of discovering exceptional, authentic spirits, shrouded by compelling stories. All of our spirits are made by true artisans, who have dedicated themselves to their noble craft, respectfully upholding the centuries’ old generational traditions and values associated with these spirits.

CORTE VETUSTO is our exquisite, award-winning Mezcal from the foothills of the Sierra Mountains in Southern Oaxaca, the spiritual home of Mezcal. For nearly four centuries, true Maestro Mezcaleros have been creating mezcal in manner largely unchanged by the forces of time. Don Juan Carlos, our 4^th generation Maestro Mezcalero, remains true to the traditional art of mezcal making. Firstly he selects only the finest, most mature agaves, before slow roasting them over mesquite wood in a sunken, rock lined earthen pit until perfectly roasted and seductively smoked. He then crushes the agave with a horse-drawn tahona, a volcanic rock wheel, with the aid of his trusty steed. The resultant bagaso is then transferred to open wooden vats to ferment, with the aid of spring water and natural airborne yeast only. This process takes weeks, as the saying goes ‘good things come to those who wait’. Finally, it is twice-distilled in either small copper and / or clay pot stills to produce an elixir unlike any other.

This is not manufacturing, it is honouring the past. With no formulas to follow, the art of making mezcal is in his blood, passed down from generation to generation. Don Juan Carlos strives to extract the truest expression of an agave distillate. It is a genuinely handcrafted spirit of utmost purity – the antithesis of modern, mass-produced products. In every glass of CORTE VETUSTO there is centuries of the Zapotec tradition of respecting the past, the agave and the land from which they both come.
